Annabelle Comes Home works because it stops trying to build mythology and instead just lets the Warrens' entire collection of cursed objects loose in one house for a night, which is a genuinely fun premise the franchise hadn't tried before. Mckenna Grace anchors the film with real vulnerability and the ensemble of haunted artifacts gives Dauberman room to stage several distinct, well-executed set pieces rather than one repetitive haunting. It doesn't reach the atmospheric heights of Annabelle: Creation but it doesn't need to, since the anthology structure keeps things moving and varied throughout. A solid, purely entertaining entry that understands its job is to deliver scares rather than deepen lore.
Synopsis
The Warrens store Annabelle behind blessed glass in their artifact room, safe from causing further harm, until a babysitter's friend opens the case out of pure curiosity and wakes every other haunted object in the collection. Mckenna Grace plays Judy Warren facing down a house full of unleashed evil while her babysitters try to protect her, and the film functions as an anthology of miniature horror set pieces rather than a single sustained threat. Gary Dauberman, who wrote the previous two Annabelle films, directs his first feature and keeps the pacing brisk across the collection of ghosts, werewolves, and a Ferryman that each get their own brief spotlight. It's the lightest entry in the Conjuring universe but the most purely entertaining as a haunted house tour.
